Our Story
While in medical school, I was drawn to the idea of preventing illness. It seemed a natural fit to make the same cookies I had created for myself, family, and friends but on a larger scale.
- Dr. Laura
I’m Dr. Laura Trice, founder of Laura’s Wholesome Junk Food based in Venice, CA. I started baking cookies at a very young age at my grandmother’s farm in Massachusetts.
I received my B.A. from Smith College and my M.D. from the University of Vermont’s College of Medicine. Like a typical college student, I loved “junk food” but craved something healthier. While in medical school, I saw how people suffered due to illnesses that could have been prevented with better nutrition. I realized that most “healthier” cookies available did not taste very good, and most cookies that tasted great were based in white flour, white sugar and hydrogenated oils. Using whole grains and whole sweeteners, I began creating recipes that tasted as good or better than any treats out there.
My passion for healthy and great tasting food led to Laura’s Wholesome Junk Food, est. 2001. My sister, Stefanie, reminded me about a photo of myself at age 4 baking at my grandmother’s house. My other sister, Elizabeth, used it to design the logo, and the company was born.
I love my cookies and still get excited watching them come out of the oven. Now I’m back in the kitchen with my mom, working on new recipes to share in a Laura’s Wholesome Junk Food dessert cookbook scheduled to be released in early 2010. I’m committed to creating flavorful and satisfying food that I’m comfortable eating myself and sharing with you, my friends, and family while maintaining very high quality standards in every batch.
